At Closer Than Breath, our Author Series invites spiritual teachers and writers whose work bridges contemplation and transformation—those who remind us that awakening is less about self-improvement and more about surrender.
In this interview we’re honored to feature Hunter Mobley, a beloved Enneagram teacher, retreat leader, and author of Letting Go, Finding You: Discovering the Sacred Path to Your True Self. Hunter’s voice carries both pastoral gentleness and contemplative depth, inviting readers into a journey of interior freedom rooted in ancient wisdom and daily practice.
Can you share the heart behind Letting Go, Finding You and how it came into being?
Hunter Mobley: Letting Go, Finding You was born out of years of sitting with people as they explored the interior landscapes of their lives through the lens of the Enneagram. Over time, I found myself craving a resource that honored both the head and the heart—a book that would not only teach the Enneagram but also invite readers into a discovery of contemplative spiritual practice.
At the heart of the book is the ancient Enneagram teaching on the passions and the virtues. Each Enneagram type is shaped by a passion—an emotional habit that reflects our false self, the part of us that strives, protects, and hides. But opposite each passion is a virtue: a spacious, soul-level quality that reflects who we truly are.
This book invites readers to make the profound discovery that they are not the caricature their Enneagram type describes. They are, in truth, the opposite.
And we don’t need another “take the hill” spiritual strategy to get there. Instead, Letting Go, Finding You offers contemplative practice as a path of rediscovery—not by striving or adding more, but by opening up, letting go, and consenting to the sacred subtraction that reveals the true self.
How does the Enneagram shape your spiritual life and work?
Hunter Mobley: The Enneagram has been my most faithful mirror. It reflects back the patterns I might otherwise ignore—the ways I strive, defend, and protect, as well as the deeper motivations that fuel my actions.
But beyond its diagnostic utility, the Enneagram has opened a doorway into deeper presence and compassion, both with myself and with others.
In my teaching and writing, I pair the Enneagram with the wisdom of the Christian contemplative tradition. For me, they are natural partners. The Enneagram shows us our interior architecture; contemplation invites us to inhabit it with stillness, humility, and trust in the Divine.
Together, they teach me that transformation isn’t about fixing ourselves—it’s about consenting to be found.
What does your daily practice look like, and how do you stay grounded?
Hunter Mobley: My daily rhythm begins with silence. Before the email inbox, before the calendar, I try to begin my day in stillness—sometimes with a word from Scripture, often with breath and a simple phrase of consent, like “Here I am.”
I also walk often, journal occasionally, and rely heavily on trusted spiritual companions who keep me honest and grounded.
Like most of us, I have a temptation to overdo and to over-identify with productivity. The Enneagram helps me notice that impulse and return to the deeper truth: that my worth is not in my doing, but in my being.
What is one invitation you’d offer to readers navigating the intersection of spirituality and personality?
Hunter Mobley: I would offer this: let the Enneagram be a gentle guide, not a rigid label. Let it open doors rather than close them.
When we approach it with humility, it becomes a sacred mirror. And when paired with spiritual practices of surrender, silence, and compassion, it can become a profound tool for spiritual growth.
Ultimately, the invitation is to remember that we are not our personality—we are beloved, held, and invited deeper. The goal isn’t perfection, but presence.
